England was a mercantile country, wherein trade was restricted for the purpose of enriching the home country. Therefore they had Navigation and Trade rules which barred foreign ships from trading within the British Empire, as soon as the USA became an independent country, we were no longer part of the Empire and thus were not allowed to legally trade with Britain or any of her far flung colonies. In order to trade goods with English colonies, the requirement was that you ship the goods in English hulls, if an American hulled ship pulled into an English colony in the W. Indies and tried to trade, the ship would be taken. The right to trade between the US and England was granted as a result of the Jay Treaty of 1794. whale I can’t believe that a teacher would agree that illegal smuggling constitutes a resumption of the legal trading between the US and Britain.
