When I installed my entrance handleset, the latch is really hard to retract and when I push down on the thumb latch, the lever/knob moves on the inside. Why is it so hard to open?

A. What you need to do is to remove the inside knob or lever. There is a small round cam that the square shaft of the lock slides into. The cam needs to be rotated 90 degrees. Once is has been rotated the thumb latch and the knob or lever will work independently of each other and the latch will work much, much easier. Also the shaft that goes from the front handle into the lock mechanism need to have the correct orientation for the hand of the door. There is a flat spot on the shaft that can be orientated, left or right, and will cause the shaft to rotate either clockwise or counter-clockwise. There should be a cardboard sleeve on the shaft that suggest the orientation before installation. If you experience difficultly, try removing the front handle and rotating the shaft 180 degrees. For more information, refer to the installation instructions.
