YOu must prime it first. Drywall is very thirsty and the paint will just get sucked right into the drywall. YOu will spend a lot of money of paint that way. It’s better economically and it will make for a better , longer lasting paint job if you prime first. If youare going to paint a darker color, be sure you tint the primer too. They can do this for you at the paint store. It is well worth it.

the paper may leave glue behind in which case the paint won’t adhere properly. try washing it first with TSP tri sodiumphosphate then prime then paint.
