When I try to run the game, I get an error message stating “ERROR – DirectX 7.0 or greater must be installed.” I have the newest version of DirectX 8.0 installed on my machine Whats going on?
This fix is from Eric Reynolds, Texas… It seems that DirectX 8.0 was not overwriting several d3d*.* files in the Windows/System directory, although it overwrote the majority of the files and it was reporting that DirectX 8.0 was installed correctly. I had DirectX 7.0A installed before DirectX 8.0 … I think what happened was DirectX 7.0A never overwrote these files to begin with and for whatever reason, DirectX 8.0 didn’t either. The only way I found to correct the problem was to boot into DOS, manually delete the files in question, and reboot the machine. Well, as soon as I did that, Windows USER.EXE file wouldn’t load correctly, so I had to reinstall Windows 98SE. As soon as THAT was accomplished, I re-loaded DirectX 8.0 once more and this time, because the entire version of DirectX files on my machine were now the DirectX 6.1A that Windows reloads whenever you reinstall Windows, DirectX 8.0 was able to copy itself correctly and that fixed that problem with the game.
