Any Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) that reviews HHS-supported or -conducted human subjects researchor any of the federal departments or agencies that have signed on to the Common Rule (45 CFR part 46) and accepts an OHRP-approved FWA to cover research it is conducting or supportingmust designate on the FWA the IRB/IEC(s) that will perform initial and continuing review of the research. Each IRB/IEC must be registered with OHRP before it may be designated on an FWA.
