If you are refering to the phases of the moon, you will see craters in the sharpest detail when they are right on the edge between the light and dark part of the moon. A full moon is interesting but does not show the detail of the craters due to a high glare factor. As the moon is going from new to full, you can go out ever night at about the same time and see totally different features.
