When older voters enter the ballot box on Thursday, what are the main issues on their minds?
NC: Our polls show that the economy is a major issue in people’s minds when they decide how to vote, and overall it is doing well. Pension issues are also key. There is a high level of pensioner poverty in the UK and we know from Adair Turner’s report that pensioners in the future will be worse off than today’s if we do not do anything. People are also very worried about public services and whether they will deliver in terms of health and social care. In particular, we need an NHS which helps people to stay healthy for longer. Older voters are also conscious about their personal freedoms, particularly Boomers, for example whether they will be able to continue work, use health and other services, or if there will be barriers placed in their way because of outmoded perceptions of people in old age.
