There are several reasons for using gold tubes. These allow mercury to be preconcentrated, making measurement possible and easier. The mercury is separated from the gas, reducing spectral interferences in the detector. Gold will trap all forms of mercury, giving a total mercury concentration, not just an Hg0 result.
