When sculpting large figures in clay, does the armature need to be removed before firing?

Yes you need to remove the armature before firing. If you leave the armature, there will probably be breaks in the drying process. I work in figures about 14 inches high to start. They shrink to about 11 inches during the drying and firing. At this size I can use the drying properties of the clay to not use an armature but i still have to cut my pieces apart and hollow.
