The DCC clients notice when their whiteclnt files as well as included files change and automatically rebuild the corresponding .dccw hash table files. Changes to the DCC server or dccd whitelist are not effective until after dbclean is run. Some text editors including versions of vi lock their files. Dccm, dccproc, and dccifd are unable to read whitelist files while they are locked.
