His mother died at 13 and Arnel Pineda found himself alone, and living with relatives and fending for himself on the streets of Manila. His mother instilled in his her love of music. At a young age, he joined singing contests to improve his singing and to help raise money for the family. For two years he lived on the streets, sleeping wherever he could. Pineda earned money by collecting bottles, newspapers, scrap metal and selling them. He would do odd jobs where ever he could. At age fifteen, he started a band with his friends. He started playing in clubs and events in the Philippines. His sung songs for their cover band and sang songs from Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Air Supply, The Eagles, and Kenny Loggins.
