Where are the Samples Collected?
We measure dissolved oxygen content, pH (hydrogen ion activity), conductivity (ionized or dissolved minerals in the water), and turbidity (clarity) in the field. We also send water samples to an analytical laboratory to determine levels of total and fecal coliform, E. coli, and Enterococcus bacteria. During the sampling years of 1996 to 2001, only fecal coliform was analyzed.

At ocean beaches, water samples are collected at knee depth from the most frequently used section of the beach. At patrolled beaches this is between the flags. At harbour beaches, samples are collected by boat from as close to the shore as possible. A sampling pole is used to collect a sample approximately 30 centimetres under the water surface. Where the beach has a netted swimming enclosure, samples are collected just outside the net.
