PGCE stands for ‘Post Graduate Certificate of Education’ which means you have to be a post graduate, i.e. have already graduated from a degree course, in order to do it. So you would first need a degree, which takes 3 years to complete. To get onto a degree course you would either need A Levels or some kind of equivalent qualifications, and these usuallly take 2 years to achieve. To be able to do A Levels you need decent GCSE grades, and to be a primary school teacher you need to have at least a C grade in English, Maths and Science at GCSE. So therefore, if you have not got these then you would need to study for them first. Being a teaching assistant does not require as many qualifications as you would be assisting a teacher, not actually be responsible for a class of children. Most further education colleges offer some kind of teaching assistant training courses, so maybe ask at the college you’re doing your GCSEs at whether they do a course.
