Where can same-sex couples currently get married?
Same-sex couples can legally marry in the states of California and Massachusetts. In New York, marriages for same-sex couples are recognized from other states or countries, but are not performed within the state. Abroad, the Netherlands was the first country to allow same-sex marriage in 2001. Same-sex marriages are also legal in Belgium, Canada, Norway, South Africa and Spain. In 2005, Spain became the first country to recognize same-sex marriage on equal terms and under the same law as all marriages.
