The big buzz after last year’s Academy Award nominations was the big snubbing of one of Hollywood’s biggest players. Cold Mountain, an awards-season favorite, wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in most major categories, including best picture. The studio behind Cold Mountain was Miramax, co-founded by Harvey Weinstein, who over the years had turned Oscar campaigning into a no-holds-barred assault. Many in Hollywood loathed him for that, and those feelings were aggravated by his track record: at least one best picture nomination in the 11 previous years and three wins. So, the buzz went, Oscar voters, finally fed up with Weinstein, decided to retaliate where it hurt. Cold Mountain got the cold shoulder. Take that, Harvey.
