Where in Oklahoma is Woodford Shale?
Answer Bill, The Woodford Shale covers what is called the Atoka Basin which is in So.Central/SE Oklahoma. The formation actually runs all the way to western Oklahoma. Last year showed an increase in activity there but I think it is still less active than other parts of the state with about half as many wells being drilled as in other fields. The active area runs North from NW Atoka County through Coal, Hughes and McIntosh Counties with some activity last year in Western Pittsburgh County. The Woodford Shale is a gas bearing shale that must be produced like the Barnett Shale in Texas, that is, it is generally drilled horizontally then fractured to gain gas flow. Apache and Chesapeake are two operators in the area but I am sure there are others moving into the area. I hope this has been of help.
