Originally iron, like everything else, is created in the center of a star that is going nova. But we might as well talk about what happens here on Earth. All minerals have their beginnings as elements either in the crust or mantle, predominantly. They are not actually created there, on the whole, but are leftovers from when Earth formed. They move around freely in the mantle or in parts of the crust that have been made molten by the heat of the mantle. Strangely enough water is in relative abundance in the mantle, but not really as we would be familiar with. It is liquid but it is hot enough to be steam if it weren’t under great pressure from the overlying rock.
