When determining where to connect for network monitoring, consider how/whether the network is segmented: • In a segmented network, a switch or router is used to separate the network into two or more segments. Because the switch or router retransmits each packet only to the segment where the destination device for that packet is connected, segmenting a network can greatly reduce utilization throughout the network. However, it also can cause network monitoring to provide significantly different results, depending on the segment to which the PC using Esi-Networx is attached. • On the other hand, an unsegmented network uses hubs to connect all the network’s devices. A hub is an electrical repeater which makes all its network traffic appear at all points on the network.
