Which area is safer: New Cross or Forest Hill?

Forest Hill is safer but New Cross is much more practical for Goldsmiths. New Cross does have decent areas, down in Telegraph Hill is pretty nice and certain other roads too. To be honest there are always plenty of weirdos on New Cross Road hanging around which made me feel slightly uncomfortable but i never had any problems even walking around on my own with my ipod on or using my mobile.
