Which book / article would be considered essential reading for understanding spiritual development in the school curriculum?

The best recent book I’ve come across is Andrew Wright’s ‘Discerning the Spirit: Teaching Spirituality in the RE Classroom’, 1999, Culham College Institute. It’s small book of just 50 pages but runs through most of the thinking about spiritual development in schools since the 1980’s. Many local education authorities have also been addressing the issues of providing opportunities for spiritual development in schools. Two that I would also recommend are: ‘Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development: Guidelines for schools in all phases’, 1995, Northumberland CC; and ‘Spiritual Development: Building opportunities for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development’, 1998, Somerset CC. If anyone would like to recommend alternatives please let us know.
