Which countries are signed up to the Schengen Convention?

0

As of March 2001, 13 EU Member States are signed up to and apply the Schengen Convention on common external frontiers, now integrated in the EU legal and institutional framework. They are Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland and Sweden. Ireland and the UK are not yet Schengen members, however they have the option to join at a later date. Both countries already requested to apply a limited subset of Schengen rules, namely in the field of police cooperation and judicial cooperation in criminal matters. In addition, an association agreement has been concluded with Iceland and Norway, two countries which apply the Schengen provisions completely.

This agreement makes it possible to continue cooperation with these two countries, which were associated with the Schengen area before the Schengen acquis was integrated into the legal framework of the European Union, due to the ‘free travel area’ they had with Denmark, Finland
