Which message type is better, file, MAPI, VIM or SMTP?
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. No one method is better in all situations. The file method has the largest bandwidth since it is limited only by the size and speed of your disk drives. It is usually the best method to use during development as it is the easiest to administer and has the minimum amount of setup. As a production transport it has the advantage of being fast and simple. The major disadvantage is that some sort of file sharing must be implemented on the remotes. In the case of laptop computers this may be more difficult than using an existing transport such as VIM. MAPI, VIM and SMTP are comparable for our purposes. They all allow you to use existing email systems as the transport for your messages. The major disadvantage is that email systems do not have the bandwidth for high data volumes.
