Travellers at risk of TB are those visiting countries where TB is common (Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Central and South America) for: a prolonged period ( over 3 months in an ‘at-risk’ area ) or frequent short visits Brief travel (e.g. a few weeks travel for business or holiday purposes) to countries where TB is common probably poses such a low risk of infection that Mantoux testing is not warranted. Brief or prolonged travel to low risk countries (Australasia, North America and Western Europe) poses such a low risk of infection that Mantoux testing is not warranted. What is the treatment? Active TB disease requires treatment with several drugs that need to be taken for a period of at least six months to achieve cure. Some of the drugs can cause side effects, so clinical and laboratory evaluations are necessary during treatment. Compliance monitoring, and often directly observed therapy, are essential.
