Scoliosis is a sideway curvature of the spine which often leads to lung and back complications. While experts at the Mayo Clinic emphasize that exercise and physical therapy can lead to a better quality of life for people with scoliosis, it also adds that these efforts will not stop the condition. Scoliosis expert and yoga instructor, Elise Browning Miller, M.A., has a different approach; she stresses that yoga can strengthen the muscles which support the spine, often allowing a decrease in the lateral curve.
