Who are the members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)?
Although the Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy differ slightly in the membership requirements, the core membership of an IACUC must include a veterinarian with experience and/or training in the care and use of laboratory animals (with delegated responsibility for the animals at the institution), one person not affiliated with the institution (to represent the community’s interests), a practicing scientist experienced in research involving animals, and one non-scientist. One individual must serve as Chair. In addition to fulfilling the above requirements, CSU’s IACUC membership also includes the University Bioethicist, and a representative from each department using animals in research on campus, as well as a statistician and an anesthetist.
