The tutors are generally graduate students and instructors in the language departments at Columbia. For less commonly taught languages tutors might be from other departments, preferably with experience teaching. Tutoring at the Learning Assistance Center is provided by Pasadena City College students who have successfully completed the courses they are tutoring, as well as a certified tutor training program. Each tutor must have a referral from his or her professor that indicates competency in the subject area. Some subjects, such as English and mathematics, require a diagnostic test.
