Who before the time of Charles Darwin, originated ideas supporting by evolutionary theory?

In the 4th and later editions of Origin of Species, Darwin included a “Historical Sketch” that discussed these two categories. You can find it here: http://darwin-online.org.uk/content/frameset?itemID=F391&viewtype=text&pageseq=1 You can also see a timeline here: http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/evotmline.html Remember, there were 5 separate theories within Origin of Species. Many people had proposed that species transform to new species. However, none of them really had a good mechanism to account for the designs in living organisms. Darwin’s discovery of natural selection was the mechanism to get design and also accounted for the changing of populations to new species as they acquired these new designs.
