Who can live in privately rented accommodation?
Anyone can rent accommodation from a private landlord. However, it is up to the landlord to choose who they let their property to. In deciding whether to accept tenants, some landlords ask for financial information from the applicants, in the form of a credit check. This process checks that the prospective tenant does not have debt problems or a poor financial record which might mean they are unable to pay their rent. Most private landlords require a deposit to be paid before renting a property. In addition, the rent is often required in advance. This can mean that a significant amount of money is required before the property can be rented (often the equivalent of two months rent).
