Who first proposed string theory?
The first higher-dimensional theory, which can be considered a precursor to modern string theory, or M-theory, was proposed by Theodr Kaluza and Felix Klein in 1921. Though the theory was found to have many falsities, it opened the door for string theory… But it that wasn’t realized for about 4 decades. It has quite a strange history, as detailed by Michio Kaku: “The origin of string theory dates back to 1968, when two young physicists at the nuclear laboratory at CERN, Geneva, Gabriele Veneziano and Mahiko Suzuki, were independently flipping through a math book and stumbled across the Euler Beta function…which strangely seemed to describe the subatomic world. The were astonished that this abstract mathematical formula seemed to descrube the collision of two pi meson particles at enormous energies.
