The Roman concrete construction method was actually lost during the middle ages and is only now being re-discovered. Roman concrete is much stronger than modern concrete because it uses both organic and inorganic materials whereas modern concrete is based solely on inorganic materials. If you’ve ever tried to make mashed potatoes from that instant powder, you’ll realize how organic materials could make for good concrete. The Romans probably thought sacrificing animals and enemies to mix blood into their concrete would appease their gods. There are many different modern concrete construction methods, shotcrete, aircrete, insulated concrete forms, etc. Problem is that the raw materials for concrete isn’t always readily available in all locations, Houston imports it’s concrete from Korea and concrete recycling is a big deal in Houston.
