Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralín Marcos was born on 11 September 1917 and died on 28 September 1989. He was elected to the presidency of the Philippines in 1966 and was ousted from power in 1986 in a massive, yet bloodless revolution. As a young law student, Marcos was arrested and convicted for the murder of Julio Nalundasan, a man who had twice defeated Marcos’ father to a seat in the National Assembly. During his incarceration, he studied for the 1938 Philippine Bar exams, and proceeded to receive one of the highest scores in the exam’s history. He then appealed his case to the Supreme Court and won. Marcos, like many young men of the period, was called to combat by the Philippine army when World War II broke out. He suited up as an intelligence officer and subsequently took part in the Bataan Death March, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers, some of whom were already suffering from malaria or otherwise injured, were forced to endure a treacherous 30-mile (42 km) hike as ord

As a law student he was accused of murdering a political opponent of his father, but Marcos defended himself and secured his own acquittal. During the Second World War he led a Philippine army unit in the anti-Japanese resistance and was held prisoner in the Bataan prison camp. Marcos was elected to the Philippines House of Representatives in 1949, standing in Ilocos Norte on behalf of the Liberal Party. In 1959 he secured election to the Senate and became its presiding officer in 1963. He switched his allegiance to the Nacionalista Party and, promising a “New Society”, was elected President in November 1965. He was brilliant, an eloquent speaker and a ladies’ man, to boot. He and his wife, Imelda, ruled the country for like 20 years – made the country great and green, at the same time, plundered the country’s coffers. International loans did not make it to the country’s treasury but to the couple’s numerous bank accounts, mostly in foreign banks. Marcos made a last ditch attempt at retaining his presidency by cheating in a snap election that pitted him against Corazon Aquino, Ninoy’s wife. That move angered thousands of Filipinos on top of being accused as the alleged mastermind in the assassination of Ninoy.
