Who organizes the event?
“This is the one time a year we all get together,” he added over the motors of pottery wheels and laughs of busy potters. Some of the potters, like Suda Goundry, only have been producing pottery since November. Other potters have been throwing bowls for years. Harry Hearne, who moved to Murphy from Tennessee, has been throwing bowls since 1985. “I love it,” he said. “I think it’s a great idea. We get to practice and do something good for the community,” said potter Sherry Tanner, who has been throwing bowls since May. “That’s one thing you can count on, potters giving to those who have less,” Tanner added. In 1990, an art class in Michigan was searching for a way to raise money for a food drive. John Hartom and Lisa Blackburn decided to hold the first Empty Bowls events. The students made ceramic bowls and served a simple meal of soup and bread. The attendees were invited to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.

The entire community contributes the funding necessary to make the event possible. These dedicated people work year round to make the event a success. The Council recommends that a local Steering Committee be established, or a existing local entity be identified, to plan, organize and host the Pre-Parliament. This Steering Committee should be made up of persons who are representative of the diversity of local religious and spiritual communities, as well as established local interreligious initiatives. The Council supports the organizing efforts of the Steering Committee through consultative services and the provision of materials. How can I get started? The Council recommends the following steps for hosting a pre-Parliament event: • Persons or parties interested in hosting a Pre-Parliament event fill out the Exploration Worksheet. • The Exploration Worksheet serves as the basis for an initial consultation interview with the Partner Cities Director of the Council to assess the feasibility of hosting a Pre-Parliament event. • A steering committee is established to plan, organize and hold the Pre-Parliament event.
