The French Revolution of 1789 did not signal the end of monarchy in France. His son was thought to have been smuggled out of the country with a view to being reinstated as Louis XVII at some time in the future. However, in reality, the boy died in the prison of The Temple, and disappeared from history so that no such king of France was ever crowned. From 1793 to 1814, France was either a republic, a military dictatorship or else a Bonapartist empire. After the abdication of Napoleon I on 6 April 1814, Louis Bourbon, brother of Louis XVI, secured the French throne with the support of the Allied Powers and of Napoleon’s foreign minister Talleyrand.
