Who was pierre de coubertin and according to him what is the most impotant thing in the olympics?

“Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin (1 January 1863 – 2 September 1937) was a French pedagogue and historian who is best known as the founder of the International Olympic Committee.” While creating the Olympics seems like a great thing to us now, Pierre was not imbued with the same sense of “sportsmanship” we now have. He was an elitist. He did not want the Games opened to the masses any more than he wanted education opened to them. He was also an idealist- he believed that the games should consist of people who just turned up on the day and did their best. No trainers or coaches were permitted. No sponsorships (hence people had to come from wealthy families to compete). Most of what goes on at the modern games would horrify de Coubertin: especially the mixing of “races”. Sorry to pour water (or should it be “wine”) on Pierre’s memory.
