who was the greatest Major League Baseball utility player of all time?
I would figure Tony Phillips, who played for the A’s, Angels, and Tigers back in the 80’s-90’s. He played all over the place, all outfield spots, second, short, even a few games at first. DHed a lot as well. He got so much playing time that he might not be considered a ‘utility player’ by some, but he was possibly the most flexible player in the AL in his time, and considered a very valuable asset wherever he went. He wasn’t the greatest fielder at any position, but had good power later in his career and drew a ton of walks, often 100+ per season. He sometimes would end up ranked towards the top of the league in walks, runs scored and on-base average. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/phillto02.shtml if you want to look over his career. PS-Gil McDougald of the Yankees was another great one, better defensively than Phillips, but not nearly as much of an offensive threat.
