Paul Schrader wrote the screenplay while living in his car! Many of his ideas came from his own fascination with firearms (he could get to sleep without sucking on the barrel of an unloaded pistol) and had a great urge for pornography. He had a dark side to his screenplay well played by Robert DeNiro.
