It is likely that you have not selected a proper font that contains the glyphs for your accented characters. This link about Java fonts may help: i18n.html. If fonts are not the issue you may be importing iCalendar data that is using illegal character sets. The only character set supported in the iCalendar RFC (2445) is UTF-8. Several major iCal vendors are using illegal character sets and you should complain to them if you see this happening. The only calendaring applications that I know for sure get this right are: Outlook and ScheduleWorld.
