Why are assessment notices mailed in January when property taxes are not due until the end of June?
Sending assessment notices early in the tax year makes it possible to meet provincial legislation that requires that all assessment complaints be heard and decisions rendered by the end of the year. The early mailing of assessment notices also provides additional time for property owners to review their assessments, estimate what their taxes may be and to budget for any possible increase. Provincial legislation provides for a 60 day complaint period. As a result you have until March 14, 2011 to file an assessment complaint with the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board.
