First off, not all brains are so crinkly. Take a rat brain; as you can see from the picture, rats have very smooth brains. Looking at the brain of a monkey, you can see a little bit of folds here and there, but that’s nothing compared to a human brain. Our brains are covered with wrinkles. Why would a human have so many wrinkles, while a rat can get by without any? As you may have noticed above, the amount of folds seems to increase with the intelligence of the species. Could these folds bestow intelligence on its owner??? Kiiiind of, but not exactly. Think about what would happen if you were to smooth out all those wrinkles. All that brain tissue folded against itself would now be exposed. Just as if you smoothed out a crinkled piece of paper, or slightly blew up a wrinkled balloon, the surface area of the brain would become much larger.
