Why Are Dogs Expensive?!?
Shops? If you’re looking in pet shops, those are puppy mill puppies. Avoid them. Properly bred dogs are expensive. This is to cover the cost of having healthy, well-tested, parents who are the best representation of their breed. The parents are DNA tested, temperament tested, OFA certified, eyes are certified, heart is certified, thyroids are tested, tested to be STD free, etc. to make sure they pass no disease, genetic or otherwise, to their puppies. The parents are given every care, so are the puppies. A good breeder also gives all the puppies in every litter their first shots and they are also wormed. No puppy is let go before it’s an appropriate age to do so, and some are kept longer if they need it. Raising dogs is expensive. Showing dogs is expensive. Breeding dogs is expensive. Making sure dogs are healthy is expensive. Raising healthy puppies is expensive.
Dogs in stores are puppy mill dogs and should NEVER be purchased…reputable breeders would never sell to a pet shop…only puppy mills do. If you buy from a reputable breeder you are paying for extensive research in the breeding and the care of the parents as well as prenatal care for the pups. This is VERY expensive and reputable breeders are not selling to make money but to improve the lineage of their kennel. Good food and vet care is very expensive as well as cost of showing the parents in order to document their superior quality of breed standards and getting them certified as well as stud fees are all taken into the calculations…
