Why are multiple-choice questions used instead of essay-type questions?
Essay examinations generally assess a narrow range of the syllabus in depth, while multiple-choice questions are likely to assess a wider range of the syllabus in less depth. Given the range of law and procedure which is included within the Part I syllabus, it would be impossible to test a sufficient range of the syllabus through the use of essay-type questions. Furthermore, a multiple-choice format ensures total objectivity, i.e. a candidate either answers the question correctly or incorrectly.
