GIST computes the visual features of a design that distinguish the sample pages it has used and then positions thumbnails on the basis of two of those (one for the vertical position, and one for the horizontal position). GIST measures the visual similarity of web pages using the most relevant of a range of possible criteria, including the variety and intensity of the colours used as well as the shapes used on a page.
