WHY CAN’T ALL SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS TREAT A MYOFUNCTIONAL PROBLEM?
In a perfect world, all professionals in a given field would be proficient in all specialties. The field of speech-language pathology, like medicine, involves many different areas of expertise. While all ASHA certified speech/language pathologists receive some basic instruction for diagnosis, it is up to individual clinicians to attend continuing education and become proficient, even specialized in certain fields within their area. A speech/language pathologist trained as an oral myologist is usually dually accredited with the International Association of Oral Myologists as well as the American Speech Language Hearing Association and carry the credentials to document it. To find such a specialist in your area feel free to consult the IAOM website directory.
