Why can the UMEX passive sampler (badge) be used when formalin is the source of the formaldehyde exposure?

U.S. OSHA does not approve the use of any passive sampler, including the UMEx 100, for compliance sampling of formaldehyde from formalin unless data is available showing good correlation between the passive sampler and active sorbent tube sampling. In OSHA Method 1007, OSHA explains that formaldehyde will react with methanol in the formalin solution to form methoxymethanol and dimethoxymethane. These two compounds have diffusive sampling rates that are different from formaldehyde which may result in low results with passive samplers. OSHA recommends active sampling with sorbent tubes for formaldehyde from formalin.
