Anne probably didn’t want her relationship with Gilbert to go anything beyond the friendship they already had. She was afraid they would never feel the same about each other if they were together on a romantic level; she was scared of losing that bond. That could explain why she stuck so close to Roy Gardner, until she realized Gilbert was ‘the one’. This quote is very evidentm, “Our friendship will be spoiled if he goes on with this nonsense.
