The Afgan government at the time requested Soviet assistance in 1978 and the Soviet Army trained the Afgan army and also supplied advisors and equipment, as well as construction troops who began installing an infrastructure in the country (one that the US & UK have been destroying since 2001) the Afgan government continued having problems with rebels and repeatedly requested Soviet military intervention. In December 1979 the Soviet Army went in, VDV paratroopers seized Kabul airport while KGB ALFA special forces seized the presidential palace of president Hafizullah Amin, and unfortunately in the melee President Amin was killed, as was the commander of the ALFA unit. Paratroopers had surrounded the palace with orders to kill anybody who left the palace. The ALFA commander had stepped outside to summon reinforcements from the paratroopers and was killed by a snipers bullet.
