Why do americans use imperial measurements?

It is bizarre indeed. I lived the story they told about somebody not converting kilometres to miles when they smashed one of their early probe to Mars into the planets surface without even slowing down. What is truly hilarious is that they have to convert all of their measurements and materials out of Imperial measurements when they trade with foreign countries. To make it even worse their measurement system is not even imperial, it is The Customary systrem and named that because it is the official system for the customs department to use.. Their weights and measurements are all different than imperial measure. A U.S. gallon is smaller making their quart smaller. The same with their liquid ounces. It gets even richer when you realize all of the standard weights and measures they use are defined by the Metric system. Inches are defined by cm.
