Why do so many people on the internet misspell the abbreviation “etc.” and the word “definitely”?
On the internet people don’t feel the need to spell things correctly, mainly because of the anonymity involved in it (e.g. annoying YouTube comments, incompetent trolling, the entire community of Yahoo! Answers). Other factors contribute to this, such as the laidback atmosphere of the internet and the general incompetence of its users. It is impossible to know, really, and while I do know that intelligence does not exactly contribute to comprehension of language, I often assume that most people are just dumb. Also I would like to warn you that delving further into this subject may either confuse you or leave you disoriented, alone, sitting naked on the back of a camel in the middle of an inaugural ball.
