Why does everyone i talk to think kurt cobain was bad at guitar?

Like some people have mentioned, people assume that Kurt wasn’t good at guitar because he used a lot of NOISE in his playing (i.e., feedback). It’s a style. True punk music (as in the Sex Pistols, not Blink 182) draws heavily on this type of noise. People are often impressed easily, especially by lots of flashy needling (rapid playing with lots of runs, etc.). It doesn’t mean you’re great at the guitar because you can do that, just like it doesn’t mean that Kurt was bad because his playing sounds more distorted. Other greats who used lots of “noise” include Jimi Hendrix and Sonic Youth. Punk music, of course, uses tons of noise. Again, it’s a style. It’s not for everyone. Remember that a lot of it is just personal opinion. Frank Zappa is considered one of the best guitarists who ever lived, but I’m not a big fan of his music. Kurt was great, but if you don’t like his music that’s your prerogative. Nobody who really understands guitar would say that he was “bad,” though.
