Why does modern poetry suck so much?

I have to disagree with your question. Not everything written in a certain era is of the same caliber (I write poetry in modern times–do I automatically suck?)… It’s true that a lot of people are dabbling in free verse these days, but it’s kind of a fad. When anything becomes popular, people who aren’t passionate about it are going to try it and maybe they won’t produce great work–but there are probably as many fantastic poets today as there ever were at any period in history. You just might have trouble sifting through the stuff that isn’t worth reading to get to the good stuff. (By the way, not all free verse poetry is terrible–sometimes it’s the best way to get across a certain feeling that might be vague or full of broken thoughts) It’s dark And light It shimmers Brightly At the edges Of my eyes And all existence It dances Spins And Trembles As I watch it It wavers Blinks And fades And I Stand silent And sigh Goodbye There–I wrote that just now in free verse. Maybe it isn’t y

Not just modern poetry but all poetry is a free expression and it has always been that way. To assign rules to any expression you defeat the purpose. Most of the really outrageous poetry on here is crap I will admit but you can’t smother the spirit. Given none of these people will ever get published writing this garbage. Nor are you forced to read their trash. So if it makes them feel good to post it I say let them. Besides I enjoy some sloppy poets blind harry for example. Anyway I feel your pain but nothing can be done.

modern poetry sucks because times change kinda like what Warhol did by painting common items he demonstrated how cliche and name brand art was becoming sorry you poor romantic times are changing and so is poetry =**[ I know Sadly we mourn the lost of playwright poets from the times their legacy where wrought but still lives crave drama so that the poets calling must be cybernetic and deficit in attention lest the audience not bother to be moved at all oh further rhyme meter things of this nature they came from free verse when English majors went back to discover the methods of madness behind great poems so ya know there are people that study language and those that use it

Hang on a minute…that’s not what I call modern poetry. It sounds old-fashioned, and you’ve grated on my nerves by using the dreaded ‘did’ word twice. So, it isn’t only modern poetry which can sometimes ‘suck’ I do agree to a certain degree with what you say. I bought a book of poetry recently, containing the winners to a competition held by an online poetry page (NOT MARS) – it was dreadful reading. Almost every single poet was trying to be esoteric and deep and despite my best efforts I was lost. Poetry for me must be about communication….this lot of so-called winners simply fell at the first hurdle.
